Knowledge acquisition for systems based on knowledge can be called knowledge engineering, according to Feigenbaum (1980) who used the term to describe the reduction of a wide context of knowledge for a set of facts and rules. The term Knowledge Engineer started to be used to denote the responsible person by development of such systems. The basic function of Knowledge Engineering is to play the role of mediator between the expert and the Knowledge Base, to extract the knowledge from the expert, to codify the same in contribution with the expert to reach an acceptable performance.Eje: Sistemas inteligentesRed de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI

The performance of horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands vegetated with rice (Oryza sativa L.) was investigated in Campina Grande (7º 13' 11" S; 35º 52' 31" W; 550 m above mean sea level), Paraíba state, northeast Brazil. The pilot-scale system comprised 24 circular tanks (76.80 cm diameter, 54 cm height) batch fed daily with water from a nearby urban stream polluted with sewage. Experimental units were filled with substrate of either sand or gravel and operated under hydraulic retention times of 5 and 10 days. Constructed wetlands demonstrated a very good performance in removing organic matter, fecal indicator microorganisms and nutrients from the influent representing a good alternative for the improvement of water quality of urban and peri-urban water resources. Vegetation was found to be the most important factor affecting their performances being the changes in both substrate and hydraulic retention time investigated herein of minor influence. Keywords: Urban polluted stream, urban polluted water treatment, constructed wetlands, effluent reuse.African Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 12(25), pp. 3992-399

    Indifferentiated osteoclastic-type giant cell carcinoma

Initially described 40 years ago (Rosai), the undifferentiated osteoclastic-type giant cell carcinoma (IOGCC) is a variant of ductal adenocarcinoma and accounts for less than 1% of exocrine pancreatic tumors. Its extreme rarity, with consequent existence of few reports and clinical experience, leads to the arousal of doubts with regard to its histogenesis, types of approach and therapeutical attitudes. It is important to note that in Portugal no similar case is registered in medical literature. A 61 year old patient admitted to the Internal Medicine Ward 3 at Coimbra University Hospital presents with a volumous intra-abdominal mass in the left hypochondrium and microcytic anemia. During the investigation, a pancreatic neoplasm was identified, and the patient was submitted to surgical resection, the anatomo-pathological study of the tumor having revealed IOGCC. The particularities of the case, current available therapeutical options and its evolution are discussed, as well as a revision of the existing literature

    Disfunção tiróidea e amiodarona

Although most patients remain clinically euthyroid, some develop amiodarone-induced hyperthyroidism (HPEAI) or hypothyroidism (HPOAI). The authors present a retrospective analysis of ten patients with amiodarone-induced thyroid dysfunction. Six patients were female and mean amiodarone intake was 17.7 months. HPOIA was more common (six patients). From all the patients with HPEAI, two had type 2, one had type 1, and one had type 3 hyperthyroidism. Symptoms suggestive of thyroid dysfunction occurred in five patients, most of them with HPOAI. In HPEAI, the most frequent symptom was exacerbation of arrhythmia (three patients). Discontinuation of amiodarone and treatment with levothyroxine was chosen in 83.3% of the HPOAI cases, while thyonamide treatment with corticosteroids and without amiodarone was the option in 75% of the HPEAI cases. There were three deaths, all in patients with HPEAI. HPEAI is potentially fatal. The clinical picture may be vague, so the thyroid monitoring is mandatory

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Chromobacterium violaceum </it>is a free-living bacterium able to survive under diverse environmental conditions. In this study we evaluate the genetic and physiological diversity of <it>Chromobacterium </it>sp. isolates from three Brazilian ecosystems: Brazilian Savannah (Cerrado), Atlantic Rain Forest and Amazon Rain Forest. We have analyzed the diversity with molecular approaches (16S rRNA gene sequences and amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis) and phenotypic surveys of antibiotic resistance and biochemistry profiles.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In general, the clusters based on physiological profiles included isolates from two or more geographical locations indicating that they are not restricted to a single ecosystem. The isolates from Brazilian Savannah presented greater physiologic diversity and their biochemical profile was the most variable of all groupings. The isolates recovered from Amazon and Atlantic Rain Forests presented the most similar biochemical characteristics to the <it>Chromobacterium violaceum </it>ATCC 12472 strain. Clusters based on biochemical profiles were congruent with clusters obtained by the 16S rRNA gene tree. According to the phylogenetic analyses, isolates from the Amazon Rain Forest and Savannah displayed a closer relationship to the <it>Chromobacterium violaceum </it>ATCC 12472. Furthermore, 16S rRNA gene tree revealed a good correlation between phylogenetic clustering and geographic origin.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The physiological analyses clearly demonstrate the high biochemical versatility found in the <it>C. violaceum </it>genome and molecular methods allowed to detect the intra and inter-population diversity of isolates from three Brazilian ecosystems.</p

“A Good Death” - Palliative Surgery in Trisomy 18
